Types of Horse Trailer
Horse trailers come in a range of styles and dimensions but there are basically three types. These are stock, slant-load and
straight-load.
Stock Trailers
A stock trailer tends to be open, with slatted sides, and is generally more `rough and ready’. They are often chosen and prove particularly
beneficial for short journeys or use around your own stables. However, they do not offer your horse much protection from the weather so aren’t
advisable for long trips.
Slant-Load Trailers
Horses are positioned diagonally in a slant-load trailer as it is thought that it’s more comfortable for the horse, particularly during the
vehicle’s acceleration or deceleration. Although slant-load trailers tend to be shorter, they are generally wide so allowance needs to be made
when you’re driving. The extra width does provide more options for additional features and custom builds. The slant-load trailer tends to be
preferred by owners who travel more widely and for longer durations.
Straight-Load Trailers
The most commonly used trailer tends to be the straight-loader. It is generally the same width as the tow vehicle so follows the same tyre
tracks for safe, comfortable driving. Though secure, a straight-load trailer is a little more restrictive in space and the horse generally has to
use its front legs more to brace itself during transit. So this trailer is better for shorter journeys, perhaps to local or regional shows.
Custom Built Horse Trailers
From these three basic models, a range of styles can be made to suit your specific requirements. In fact, custom-build horse trailers are
becoming increasingly common and can offer many extra features for you and your horses’ comfort, especially for regular and long journeys.
