Buying a Used Horse Trailer
Buying a used horse trailer is ideal if you’re looking for a cheap second run-around horse trailer or one that has better specifications
without the `new’ price tag. A used horse trailer is, however, only cost-effective if you make the right choice!
When looking for a used horse trailer, it pays to be particular about what you want and extremely thorough when inspecting the vehicle for the
safety of you and your horse. Whether you buy from a used trailer dealer or a private seller, make the following checks:
- Ensure that the horse trailer is fit for the road and meets legal requirements. Check the wheels, tyres, brakes and lights. If you do not
have the relevant mechanical or technical expertise, take someone knowledgeable with you to inspect the vehicle or arrange for an independent
inspection.
- Make sure that the hitching system is suitable for your towing vehicle and is in good condition. Examine the locking device and make sure
that there is a fail-safe mechanism. This usually consists of a wire noose which is placed around the ball hitch after coupling. Examine the
jockey wheel, which helps move the trailer when unhitched. Attach the horse trailer to your towing vehicle to ensure that everything is in
good working order.
- Examine the trailer itself starting with the floor and ramp. Don’t be satisfied with a quick visual inspection. Use a screwdriver to
check boards and look under mats. Be wary of any damp, soft, spongy areas. It’s absolutely vital that the floor is free from rot for the
safety of your horse(s).
- Check the walls both inside and out, along with any hinges and joints. Look carefully for any rot, dents or damage. Also check the
stability of partitions.
- Check underneath the trailer. If possible, go under with a torch and thoroughly inspect for signs of damage or weakness.
- Make sure that the locking mechanisms are working.
- Inspect every feature of the horse trailer to ensure that everything is in good, clean working order.
It’s advisable to inspect the horse trailer in good light. Use a torch where needed. If possible, arrange to test drive with your horse(s) on
board the trailer to make sure that the trailer meets your requirements.
A thorough inspection will ensure that you buy a used horse trailer that is safe and in a good state of repair. With care and attention, your
purchase can prove a sound investment and one that will last for years.
